Story
Two years after Commander Shepard repelled invading Reapers bent on the destruction of organic life, a mysterious new enemy has emerged. On the fringes of known space, something is silently abducting entire human colonies. Now Shepard must work with Cerberus, a ruthless organization devoted to human survival at any cost, to stop the most terrifying threat mankind has ever faced. To even attempt this perilous mission, Shepard must assemble the galaxy’s most elite team and command the most powerful ship ever built. Even then, they say it would be suicide. Commander Shepard intends to prove them wrong.

Gameplay
An space-based action RPG like its predecessor, gameplay in Mass Effect 2 revolves around the player's particular version of Commander Shepard and continuing development of this character as the game proceeds. As the game opens a variety of character classes are made available to the player, with talents, both exclusive and general, associated with each. With experience these talents are leveled up, resulting in the unlocking of related abilities and/or entirely new talents. The player has the ability to customize their Commander Shepard in a number of ways including physical appearance, gender, and certain aspects of their personal history, with the rub being that these choices can influence things like available missions, dialogue choices with non-player characters (NPCs), and character background.

Accompanying this main character are a number of preset supporting characters that the player can direct and develop relationships with, which again, will alter the outcome of the story. All the characters from the original game make an appearance in Mass Effect 2, but the immediate characters surrounding Commander Shepard are new. Additional new features that players can expect to experience include new alien races, a more realistic damage system, a new heavy weapons system allowing for maximum damage, a regenerative health system, a dramatic increase in the number of character animations available to Shepard, and updates to the dialogue mechanic used when conversing with NPCs.

Integration with the Original Mass Effect
Mass Effect 2 allows players of the original Mass Effect game to import save games to continue the story of their own Commander Shepard. In doing this, the decisions that were made in the first game will affect the events of the second game. In addition, characters from the first game will return as long as they were not killed off by the player in the first game. On the other hand, new players coming to the series for the first time in Mass Effect 2 will start a brand-new character, discover the events of the previous games a they progress and embark on a thrilling stand-alone adventure that does not require the previous game for play.

    « wonderful experience »
one of the best games i have played in a long time [if ever]. played it three times through, even with other new games waiting for me to play them. really terrific, and even better if you have played through the first game. you could play this on its own, but the story is more compelling and you care more about the characters if you have played the original. know that they are a little different, especially the tempo of the game itself, with the first one dragging on a little at times. but still fun as well.

« Space Opera Game you have been waiting for »
This is bar none, one of the finest games ever made. Think of it as a cross between the Dirty Dozen, Star Trek, and Star Wars. As this is a Bioware game, expect the highest level of polish. I cannot stop playing this game. If you can afford it, spring for the Collector's Edition which comes with a code for the Cerberus Network (which you use to download more DLC: items, characters, etc), the Collector's Armor and Assault Rifle, a tin, making of disc, and small art book.

« Mass Effect 2, the greatest RPG of its kind »
Being a relatively new type of shooter RPG, Mass Effect showed the world that 360 can truly outdo PS3 in RPGs. Mass Effect 2 does the same by modernizing their original version but holding true to basic gameplay, story, and quality content. If you are cruising reviews to choose the best game to invest it, choose Mass Effect 2.

« One great video game experience »
This is the gem of dialogue driven games; as good as the game play is, the real reward is talking with your crew after a mission. And that's something that's rare outside of the Mass Effect series. The story may be as linier as that in most games; but, it feels like you as the player get to determine how the important events play out. And in this case a little goes a long way; you feel like your game is uniquely yours, and that your Shepard is uniquely yours. Heck, I was a fan of the first Mass Effect and even I was surprised how much I'd missed this series.

Compared with its predecessor, Mass Effect 2 drops some of the classic sci fi atmosphere for a more Hollywood-ized galaxy. In the first game alien worlds looked like artist conceptions from NASA; in the sequel most of your missions occur on the streets of futuristic cities, and explorable worlds either resemble Caribbean islands or brown Marscapes. The Mako wasn't a fun vehicle; but, dropping it for tedious orbital scanning makes outer space feel much less palpable.

It's also less intimate; the new characters are more colorful, but not as believable as those in Mass Effect. And, I was disappointed not to have more time with the original crew; in particular, I was disappointed not to have the opportunity to develop the love story from the previous game. Luckily, it sounds like Bioware has something special planned for the love story between you and your first Mass Effect partner in Mass Effect 3; I hope they don't disappoint me.

But Mass Effect 2 is a success, not a failure. Replaying the first game I could understand the praise heaped on the new combat system; combat in the first game feels clunky and awkward by comparison. The core story is very strong, maybe not quite as compelling as the original; but, good in its own right. And some of the character specific missions are really well written. Even morally Mass Effect 2 gets high marks: Female characters are strong, self sufficient, and don't have elaborate histories of sexual abuse (which goes someway toward making up for Dragon Age: Origins). And I for one like having "dark side" options that are more Dirty Harry than Hannibal Lecter. Now, if Bioware would only tie the character missions back into the main story, substitute something for the tedious planet scanning, and open up the galaxy they'd have the perfect game.

In a nutshell, Mass Effect 2 is one of the most engrossing games ever made. Don't wait too long to pick this one up, because video games don't get much better.

Well written, well designed, great amount of gameplay, very expansive, and all-around amazing game. Make sure to get the full experience and play through the original first. You won't be disappointed.
